Summer Series: Barbeque

Welcome to the Autism Clarified Summer Series! Today, we’re diving into an essential element for anyone working with individuals facing hard moments, whether they're children or adults with disabilities. I'm Jacquelene, and for the past 19 years, I've dedicated myself to helping families, therapists, and teachers support their clients through these challenging times. In this solo episode of the Autism Clarified podcast, we're exploring a surprisingly effective metaphor: the hamburger.

[3:09] The Hamburger Metaphor

Imagine a summer barbecue. What’s at the center of every great barbecue? A delicious, hand-pattied hamburger. This simple meal represents something vital in our practice: regulation. Just as a hamburger can't be complete without a patty, effective support and growth can't happen without regulation. At its core, our method at Illuminate Academy focuses on humanism, ensuring that our strategies are effective for all—neurodivergent and neurotypical individuals alike.

[4:09] Regulation: The Patty of Our Hamburger

Consider the patty as the essential element of regulation. For anyone to thrive in daily life, being regulated is crucial. This means being present, engaged, and ready to face challenges. Whether you’re a neurotypical or neurodivergent individual, regulation is fundamental.

I recently spoke with a mom whose three-year-old was dismissed by a therapist for needing behavior services first. This scenario often stems from a lack of knowledge on handling hard moments. Instead of rushing to outcomes, we need to focus on the process, beginning with understanding regulation.

[6:20] The Law of Polarity

The law of polarity states that opposites exist together: up has down, right has left. By recognizing what feels regulating, you can also identify what feels dysregulating. For example, if you enjoy hot weather, you may dislike cold weather. This understanding helps tailor support for both yourself and others.

[7:22] Micro Moments of Regulation

Throughout your day, notice small moments when you feel good. Reflect on these micro moments to reinforce positive experiences and improve overall regulation. For example, you might find joy in seeing a beautiful flower or hearing a bird sing. These tiny moments contribute to a more balanced and regulated state.

[9:00] Application in Practice

As a therapist, take brief moments to jot down what you notice your clients enjoy and find regulating. This practice not only enhances your sessions but also helps build a deeper connection and understanding.

[10:21] Join Our Challenge

If you’re ready to take your practice to the next level, join our "Handling the Hard" challenge starting on July 15th. This challenge will transform your mindset and equip you with powerful strategies to support growth and overcome hard moments. Visit our Instagram page, Illuminate Academy, or my personal page, Jacqueline Negrelli, for more details. You can also find the link in the podcast description below.

Together, we can meaningfully support the world to grow. See you next time, where we'll discuss the soft, pillowy bun of our hamburger metaphor. Until then, enjoy your next barbecue and remember the importance of the patty—regulation.
